Taking SPRAVATO® nasal spray is a straightforward process, conducted under the supervision of our healthcare professionals in a comfortable healthcare setting. Here’s what you can expect:
Evaluation
Your journey at Lumos Mental Health begins with an evaluation with our psychiatric medical provider. During this appointment the provider will inquire about your medical and mental health treatment history including medications, treatments and symptoms. If you meet the criteria for Spravato the provider will recommend you for treatment. Once a complete history is gathered, your provider will lay out the options, and together you will create the plan to move forward.
Monitoring and Support
Throughout your Spravato session, our healthcare team will closely monitor your well-being. Clients are monitored to see real time blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation measurements.
We’ll assess your readiness to leave the healthcare setting after each use.
Pre-Authorization
Personalized Treatment Plan
Insurance covers Spravato in most cases but does require pre-authorization from your insurance carrier prior to beginning treatment. This process can take time to complete.
Once approved, the path to a new you begins!
Your provider will determine the appropriate dosage and schedule for your Spravato treatment. Each session lasts about 2 hours. You will self-administer Spravato, following the instructions provided by our provider.
They will demonstrate the proper technique for using the nasal spray device.
Adherence to Guidelines
To minimize the risk of side effects, it’s crucial to follow specific guidelines, such as refraining from eating for at least four hours before using Spravato and avoiding liquids for at least 30 minutes prior. You will discuss these guidelines with your provider prior to your appointment.
Medication Interaction
If you’re taking nasal corticosteroids or nasal decongestants, ensure you take these medications at least one hour before using SPRAVATO® to prevent potential interactions.

What To Expect
Clients are closely observed and monitored by our staff throughout treatment to help ensure a safe and comfortable experience. During each session, our team carefully monitors vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation, while providing ongoing support and attention to each patient's needs.

You will be ready to go home after our medical provider clears you for release. You cannot drive home, so please secure a ride with a friend or family member.

Insurance Coverage
Insurance coverage for Spravato can vary significantly depending on you specific plan and policy. There are two ways that Spravato may be covered under a patient’s insurance plan.
1. Medical Benefits: Some insurance plans cover Spravato as a part of your Medical benefits.
2. Pharmacy Plan: Alternatively, it may be covered under your pharmacy benefits.
Since Spravato requires administration by a healthcare professional and 2-hour monitoring, there are two billing aspects:
1. Medication Cost: This includes the cost of the medication itself, which can be covered through pharmacy or medical benefits.
2. Clinical Monitoring: The 2-hour observation and monitoring by our clinical team.
At Lumos Mental Health, we conduct a through investigation of each clients insurance plan and benefits to determine coverage and any potential out-of-pocket cost. Clients will receive an estimated expected out-of-pocket cost before starting treatment. Additionally, we assist patients in exploring options, including the Spravato withME program, which helps reduce cost for those with no insurance coverage or lower out-of-pocket expenses.
